JUDITH DOWNES, 66, of Port Monmouth, MIDDLETOWN

April 27, 2008

JUDITH DOWNES, 66, of Port Monmouth, MIDDLETOWN, died Friday, April 25, at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, due to complications arising one year after her lung transplant. Born in Linden, Mrs. Downes lived in Middletown for most of her life. She was a graduate of Middletown High School, Class of 1960. Prior to her retirement due to illness in 2005, she was a certified nurse's aide for nearly 40 years, last employed at King James Care Center, Navesink. Judy was a devoted wife, beloved mother, sister and friend. She had strong charitable beliefs, was an avid reader and an active member of her senior community. She was a member of Bayshore Village, Port Monmouth, and Croyden Hall Senior Center, Leonardo.

She was predeceased by her parents, John and Grace Benbrook; and a brother, Jim. She is survived by her husband of 31 years, Duane Downes; three children, Bonnie Westgate of Pinellas Park, Fla., Scott Westgate of Pinellas Park, and Wendy Westgate of Shrewsbury; two brothers, John Benbrook of Maine and Florida, and Ray Benbrook of Freehold; one sister, Linda Rogers of Chipley, Fla.; two stepsons, Leon and Hal; and one granddaughter, Tessa.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Posten's Funeral Home, 59 E. Lincoln Ave., Atlantic Highlands. Funeral service will be held during the evening calling hours. Cremation will be private. Contributions in Judy's memory can be made to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, 1332 N. Halsted St., Suite 201, Chicago, IL, 60622 www.pulmonaryfibrosis. org, or to any animal welfare organization.
