DONALD JACK UHRIG
AGE: 69 LEONARDO
Donald Jack "Dutch" Uhrig, 69, of Leonardo, NJ, died August 1, 2009 in Long Branch, NJ. Born June 20, 1940 in Keansburg, NJ, Donald graduated from Leonardo High School in 1957, the last graduating class of Leonardo High School. He was Class President his junior year and a member of the Student Council. He earned 2 varsity letters in football, 3 varsity letters in both basketball and baseball. He was 1st Team All County and All Shore in basketball and baseball and 2nd Team All State. He played basketball and baseball for the 24th Infantry Division in Germany in 1959 and 1960. He served in the United States Army from 1957 to 1960 and was recalled for the Berlin Crisis and served from 1961 through 1962 as a Buck Sergeant.
He worked for the United States Postal Service for 35 years and served as Postmaster of Leonardo during that time. He was a member of the National Association of Postmasters and a member of the Community Fire Company. He was inducted into the Middletown High School Hall of Fame in 1993.
He was predeceased by his mother and father, Ottilie and George Uhrig, and by his sisters Joan and Patty. He is survived by his son Donny Uhrig, his daughters Donna Diodato and Carole Root, his daughter-in-law Jennifer Uhrig, his son-in-law John Diodato and his eight grandchildren; Rene, John, Tyler, Eric, Jack, Danny, David and Maxine; as well as his brother George "Fudgie", and sisters Kay "Cookie" and Doris.
Visiting will be Wednesday, August 5, 2009 from 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm & 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm at John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, 115 Tindall Road, Middletown. Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday, August 6, 2009 at 11:00 am at the funeral home. Condolences may
