MARTIN V. LAWLOR
AGE: 95 PORT MONMOUTH
Martin V. Lawlor, 95, of Port Monmouth, Middletown, died Thursday, Sept. 18, at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Union City, he was raised in Jersey City, and has lived in Port Monmouth for the past 72 years, where he was a communicant of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth and a member of the Holy Name Society. He retired as treasurer from Associated Aviation Underwriters, New York City in 1976 after 46 years of service. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Army during the Battle of the Bulge in Germany, where he was captured and became a Prisoner of War (POW). He was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and P.O.W. medals, as well as a Combat Infantry Badge and two Battle Stars. He was a life member (63 years) and past commander of the American Legion Post 338, Leonardo. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans and the American Ex-Prisoners of War. He was extremely civic minded in the community serving in many civic associations, including the Middletown Township Board of Education, the Middletown Township Committee, Trustee and Director of the MCOSS (now VNA of Central Jersey), Chairman of the Middletown Housing Authority, Chairman of the Middletown Sewerage Authority, president of the Port Monmouth Democratic Club and a founder and president of the Port Monmouth Civic Association. He was also founder and president of the Martin V. Lawlor Neighborhood Club, which provided Thanksgiving baskets to residents throughout Middletown.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 66 years, Rita J. Kaufman Lawlor, in 2000; his parents, Martin and Christina Lawlor; and a brother, Joseph Lawlor, in 2003. Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law, Marie Lawlor Bevacqua and Alfred Bevacqua Jr. of Middletown; a son and daughter-in-law, Martin and Patricia Lawlor of Greensboro, N.C.; two grandsons, Jeffrey and Kevin Bevacqua; five granddaughters, Jennifer Bevacqua delaConcepcion, Colleen Lawlor Heniford, Chontel Lawlor Loskill, Kimberly and Allison Lawlor; three great-grandsons, Jaden delaConcepcion, Jack and Justin Bevacqua; three great-granddaughters, Kayla and Kamlyn Bevacqua and Alexa delaConcepcion; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today and 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, 115 Tindall Road, Middletown. Funeral services will be held at 9:45 a.m. Monday at the funeral home, followed by a funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Chapel, Leonardville Road, Middletown. Interment will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown. Donations may be made in his memory to the Prader-Willi Syndrome Association (PWSA-USA), 8588 Potter Park Drive, Suite 500, Sarasota, FL 34238.
